High Above the Mundane: Designing a Whimsical Sanctuary in the Clouds

As the Creative Director at TRIPP, my mission is to build more than just environments; I aim to build emotional containers. In our latest focus meditation worldscape, I wanted to explore the sensation of suspension, that weightless, “happy” feeling of floating far above the world, where the air is clear and the perspective is infinite.

Designing a Focus Meditation for Comfort in the Heights

Designing a focus meditation experience at great heights required balancing wonder with emotional safety. When you’re high above a vast countryside, the sensation can sometimes lean toward vertigo. To counter this, I intentionally avoided realism in the landscape. Our clouds aren’t wispy or thin; they are thick, playful shapes that look like marshmallows or whipped cream. This whimsical style keeps the experience “soft,” signaling to the brain that this is a safe, dreamlike space rather than a precarious height.

To further establish that sense of safety, I added massive, floating city buildings. Seeing these solid, industrial structures, complete with humming propellers and sturdy balconies anchors the user. You aren’t just floating in the void; you are a guest in a soaring, magical civilization.

The Art of Star-Fishing

The journey begins on a rustic platform. If you look closely, you’ll see the hallmarks of a quiet afternoon: wooden chairs and fishing gear. But there’s a twist. Since the water is miles below, the inhabitants of this world have turned their eyes upward. Instead of trout or bass, you’ll find bright, colorful stars hanging like prize fish.

This “star-fishing” concept is meant to spark a sense of childlike wonder. It reminds us that in a meditative state, we can “catch” light and clarity instead of getting bogged down by the heavy “catch” of our daily lives.

A Softer Kind of Transition

Every Focus TRIPP experience features a kaleidoscope tunnel, but for this world, I wanted a departure from our high-intensity visuals. I approached this stage with a much softer palette and texture. The goal was to create a tunnel that feels like passing through a gentle mist or a watercolor painting, a bridge that maintains your focus without breaking the peaceful “float” we’ve established.

From Daylight Wonder to Midnight Awe

The meditation concludes with a transition into night. As the sun sets, the mood shifts from playful to profound. You find yourself beside the largest floating city with tall windows of party and light, looking down at the clouds now under-lit by the warm, glowing embers of the towns far below.

Against a deep, star-filled sky, we introduce the final beat: fireworks. As you take your closing breaths, these bursts of pink and gold pop in the sky near you. This focus meditation experience was designed to leave you feeling lighter, calmer, and gently expanded. It’s a moment of surprise designed to elicit “Awe” that specific psychological state that humbles us and expands our sense of time and possibility. Research shows that awe can broaden perception and support emotional regulation, making it a powerful state for meditation.

I can’t wait for you to step onto the platform, pick up a star-rod, and float with us.

And if you don’t have VR, don’t worry—you can still experience Above the Clouds on mobile. The worldscape is now available in the TRIPP mobile app, where you can try it for free and float wherever you are.
